Great Artists Start Ugly

Whether you are pulling out needles, yarn, paintbrushes, or beads, remember to make it ugly first.

That's right. Make it ugly.

If you allow yourself the freedom of making a disaster then you give yourself the gift of letting go and freeing the creative juices wanting (waiting) to burst forth.

Michelangelo did not create a masterpiece on his first try at stone. And neither will you.

So make the decision to make something or put up the supplies and make nothing.

If you spend all the time daydreaming about what you will create then you leave no room for actually creating your dreams. And that is the beautiful part about getting creative;

♥You actually create something.

♥And learn what works and what doesn't.

Grab that blank paper and write. Paint on that canvas sitting there for months (I have this problem). Cut out that pattern already.

And come back and tell us what you made.

QUESTION: What is something you have hesitated making because of the learning curve involved?

And don't forget to share at least 1-2 sentences of how you make difference for a chance to win! Someone said they don't like to toot their own horn but celebrating our journey is more like it! Enter HERE.

In crochet, sometimes it takes a lot of ripping out and redoing to make the piece come out right. But, eventually, it does! Plus I learn how it should be made or, if I'm using a pattern, how it should be adjusted for my particular vision.

What a great post! In almost every painting I have done there is an "ugly stage" that I just have to paint through. Maybe if I start ugly, I'll get through it faster! LOL - must share this with my painting class!

I want to learn how to paint and after staring at a blank canvas for weeks, I attempted it. My painting wasn't at all as it was in my mind and was rather ugly but I did it! It can only get better from here!

edi - that's too funny! My work room is a mess, just like my desk at work. Didn't used to be... guess I'm just too busy creating to clean up! {:-D

You are so right!!! I've been doing a LOT of making it ugly lately. Namely- I've been trying to sew a bench pad cover for our guest room and it has gone horribly, horribly wrong. Like order new fabric and start from scratch wrong!!! So frustrating, but you're right- I need to let that be my "Ugly" and let that be OK.

Just plunge in and go for it! Even if you don't like the result, you will have learned what doesn't work. Perhaps your ugly creation can be re-worked or cut up to make something else.
